No other issue is more important to John than working to ensure that all Americans have access to high-quality, affordable health care.
John’s mother was an emergency room nurse at Denver General Hospital. After long days at work, she brought home stories of people and families who had to use the E.R. for their primary care. When people don’t have affordable, high-quality health insurance, they delay seeking medical care, their costs go up, their quality of care goes down, and people suffer and even die unnecessarily.

John is proud that he served in Barack Obama’s Administration, which expanded access to healthcare to tens of millions of Americans, including hundreds of thousands of Coloradans.
But too many Americans still don’t have access to the health care services they need:
- Millions of Americans are still not insured under the Affordable Care Act. They face life-and-death choices that shouldn’t exist in a prosperous nation like ours.
- Too many people who are insured still don’t have adequate coverage, and have high deductibles or are paying too much for even the most basic care.
- Cory Gardner has voted repeatedly to repeal the Affordable Care Act -- including the protection for people with pre-existing conditions -- without offering any viable replacement. He has teamed up with Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump to threaten the health care of hundreds of thousands of Coloradans, and tens of millions of Americans. And Republican states have sued (again!) to seek to have the Affordable Care Act found unconstitutional.
- Cory Gardner and the Republican Senate are a clear and present danger to millions of Americans’ access to healthcare. The most important priority for healthcare access -- including protecting Americans with pre-existing health conditions -- is repealing and replacing Cory Gardner.
Cory Gardner's Healthcare Record
But we must do more. Nobody should ever have to choose between their health and their financial security.
John will work tirelessly to strengthen the Affordable Care Act by creating a “public option” for health care insurance nationally. He joins Colorado leaders like Senator Michael Bennet in supporting an expansive national public insurance option, which would introduce competition into the healthcare market, provide an affordable and high-quality option for every uninsured American, and drive down costs for everyone.
He will also work to rebuild the Affordable Care Act after years of Republican efforts to undermine the law. Cory Gardner and his allies have turned Obamacare into a shell of itself, repealing key provisions of the law like reinsurance subsidies and gutting the individual mandate. These measures were designed to keep costs down for all. If they get their way, protections for pre-existing conditions could soon disappear.
John will also focus on lowering the cost of prescription drugs. As Colorado’s U.S. Attorney, he secured some of the largest penalties against multinational drug companies in history, because those drug companies -- companies like GlaxoSmithKline -- were defrauding Colorado patients.
